Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, according to the World Health Organization. It is the leading cause of blindness among African Americans. It is estimated that over 4 million Americans have glaucoma but only half of those know they have it. For this very reason, glaucoma screening is a very important service that we offer at Barrett Eye Care. Our doctors have treated thousands of glaucoma patients and screened many, many more patients for glaucoma. If you are African American or if you have a family history of glaucoma, you should routinely get screened for the disease.

During our routine, comprehensive eye exams, we screen every patient for glaucoma by checking intraocular pressures and evaluating the health of the optic nerves. If any suspicious findings are noted, further testing is undertaken to help find out if a patient has glaucoma or ocular hypertension. In our office, we have all of the latest diagnostic tests to help screen for glaucoma including, pachymetry, gonioscopy, Humphrey visual field testing and optical coherence tomography. Comprehensive eye exams including glaucoma screening are commonly covered by most major medical insurance plans.
